Viking Car Bingo!
Weather permitting, my colleague Terry and I like to take a walk
around the office neighborhood towards the late afternoon. We do
this to get out of the office for a bit, for exercise, and to take
the afternoon mail down to the corner postbox. Deep in the heart
of summer 2002, Terry and I started taking note of the out-of-state
license plates that we spotted from time to time during the walks.
What started out as a lark has now become a serious pastime, on
the way to a major obsession! We figure that sooner or later, if
we keep our eyes peeled, we'll find license plates for all 50 states!
Doesn't everyone come to Tulsa at some time in their life?
The table you see below shows our progress so far. We're almost
halfway to our goal. After we started keeping track of the foreign
plates we encountered, we decided to note the date we first spotted
the state's plates, as well. Unfortunately, we'd added this feature
after spotting our first out-of-state plates. That's why the "Spotted"
column shows a date in some cases, while the word "Yes"
in others. (A blank field means we're still looking for that plate.)
You can help!
If you live in a state that we haven't spotted yet, hop in your
car and drive to Tulsa for a visit! Park in back of the Amerisuites
hotel (near the intersection of Yale and 71st street) between 3:30pm
and 4pm on any weekday and Terry and I are very likely to spot your
car, thus helping us complete our quest! And if you spot Terry and
me on our walk to the mailbox, give us a holler! We'd be happy to
visit with you for a while, and if I have my camera with me, I'll
add your photo to this page. Think of it; fame and notoriety just
by visiting our fine city!
(I'm sorry we can't offer you any remuneration, financial or otherwise,
for assisting in our efforts. If we had that kind of money to spare,
Terry and I wouldn't need day jobs! Heck, with that kind of resources
behind us, we'd just go visit your state to see what the
license plates look like.)
